Dilworth was Charlotte's first streetcar suburb, and it still behaves like one. Front porches face the sidewalk, the blocks are short, and you can walk to dinner. For a lot of buyers it is the most livable neighborhood in the city.
The feel
Neighborly and genuinely pedestrian. East Boulevard runs through the middle with restaurants, coffee and small businesses, and Latta Park sits in the center of it all.
It is close enough to Uptown to walk on a nice day, which very few Charlotte neighborhoods can claim.
What you'll find
Craftsman bungalows and four-squares, many restored, alongside larger homes toward the edges and newer infill where lots have turned over.
Historic district guidelines apply in parts of the neighborhood, worth understanding before you plan an addition.
Who it suits
Buyers who want to walk places, who like older houses with original detail, and who would rather have a porch and a shorter commute than a larger lot further out.
How it came to be
Dilworth opened on 20 May 1891, developed by Edward Dilworth Latta through his Charlotte Consolidated Construction Company, known locally as the 4 Cs. Latta's electric streetcar line had begun running two days earlier, on 18 May, and the two were entirely connected: the streetcar existed to sell the suburb.
Latta commissioned the Olmsted firm to lay out a section, and instead of Uptown's grid the streets were curved to follow the land. Latta Park opened the same year with a lake, a pavilion and a greenhouse.

Dilworth attracts two very different buyers, people leaving Uptown who want a porch, and people leaving the suburbs who want to walk somewhere. Both are competing for the same restored bungalows.
